Antonio Buero Vallejo señala, desde sus primeros textos teóricos, la obligación que tiene el creador de buscar modos de expresarse en una sociedad violentada por imposiciones censoriales. Sus estrenos teatrales tuvieron a veces una dimensión política, ya que constituían una forma de resistencia cívica y afirmación ética, en una dictadura que no permitía otras manifestaciones de libertad. En «Hoy es fiesta» hay una potente intención social: un grupo de personajes típicos de clase media baja son presentados en un entorno que determina, en cierta medida, su inferior posición. Ellos mismos van mostrando los problemas que les acucian, agravados por el estatismo del mundo que les rodea, las posibles pequeñas soluciones y sus particulares sueños. En «El tragaluz» la rivalidad fraterna remite de inmediato a la que tuvo lugar en la guerra civil y a la difícil convivencia posterior, con especial relieve a través de la figura de El padre.
